Submit Your Manuscript

Please complete the form below in order to submit your manuscript for consideration. All uploads must be in Microsoft Word .doc, .docx, or .rtf format. Fields marked with * are required.

Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been and will not be published nor is presently submitted elsewhere, that all persons listed as authors have given their approval for the submission of the paper, and that any person cited as a source of personal communication has approved such citation. Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that, if it is accepted for publication, copyright of the article, including the right to reproduce that article in any form and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Publisher will not refuse any reasonable request by the author for permission to reproduce any of his or her contributions to the Journal of Writing Assessment.

Manuscript Preparation: Submission should be between 15 and 30 pages in length, typed, double-spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides. Translated to word counts, submissions would fall between 5000-7500 words. Include a 200-word abstract and five key words. Please include a current email address with your materials.  Ensure that the entire manuscript (including figures and tables) adheres to current APA publication standards.

Human Subjects Review/Institutional Review Protocol: If the manuscript includes work that involves human subjects, a statement must be provided within the text of the manuscript which details the procedures followed ensuring compliance with laws and institutional review processes. The authors must follow informed consent procedures, and a statement that describes the ways in which informed consent was followed must be included in the manuscript. A copy of the Human Subjects Review/IRB approval including institutional affiliation must be included with the final manuscript submission.

Style: The style guidelines of the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association should be followed, especially for reference lists and text citation of sources (see References below).

Review: As manuscripts are submitted for blind review, all identifying information should be removed from the body of the paper including the properties section. In Microsoft Word, go to the File menu>Properties>Summary and erase and save the document without the author information. Manuscripts that are not blinded will be returned to the lead author before the manuscript will be considered.

Tables and Figures: Tables and figures should follow formatting guidelines for the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Tables and figures should be completely understandable, independent of the text. Each table and figure must be mentioned in the text, given a title, and consecutively numbered with Arabic numerals. Authors must provide good-quality originals of all figures to be directly reproduced for publication. Color originals, which will be published in black and white, are discouraged.

Notes: Notes should be used sparingly and indicated by consecutive numbers in the text. Acknowledgements, grant numbers, or other credits, should be given as a separated, asterisked note.

References: References should follow the guidelines for the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.

Permissions: Copies of any letters granting permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, or lengthy quoted passages should be included with the manuscript.

Corrections: Authors are expected to correct and return page proofs to the editor within a few days of receipt.
